Why this project matters
More Cancer Center Projects
An academic medical center in the heart of New York City transforms the patient experience through cutting-edge medical technology. Skanska used innovative solutions to provide easy access for placing one of only a few MR-LINAC scanners in the U.S. in its suite without disrupting patient schedules in this active hospital. Through this significant technological leap in cancer treatment, physicians deliver radiation therapy with unprecedented precision.
More Teaching Hospital Projects
Using a collaborative project delivery model, Skanska partnered with Oregon Health and Sciences University, the state’s only public academic health center, on its 14-story hospital expansion. Built to accommodate the growing demand in inpatient volume, the addition improves healthcare access for those community members who are most vulnerable. The flagship campus efficiently serves as a national research hub developing lifesaving therapies and a deeper understanding of oncology care.
More Specialty Hospitals/ Centers of Excellence Projects
Reimagining orthopedic care, Skanska constructed Florida’s first dedicated specialty orthopedic hospital. Under one roof, the facility combines an ambulatory surgery center with an orthopedic specialty inpatient hospital and creates unparalleled comfort and ease of use for patients and physicians alike by offering all services in a single location. Receiving the 2022 American Architecture Award, this unique, all-in-one center symbolizes the future of orthopedic design.
More Teaching Hospitals Projects
Collaboration between university research and patient care is taking on a new meaning. Heightened financial challenges in today’s market have some academic medical centers looking to their university partners for creative financial strategies and partnerships that support growth needs for both the university and health system. Skanska is upgrading the former Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio to meet the needs of both UC Health and the University of Cincinnati. A portion of the hospital will become research space for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. UC Health will be leasing and occupying portions of the building for inpatient and outpatient services, clinical trials, pharmacy and administrative operations.
Cincinnati, OH | 74,000-SF renovation/
197,000-SF parking garage
As one of the only Boston construction projects deemed essential to continue work at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Skanska’s renovation of the Level 1 Trauma Center took on a new sense of urgency in fulfilling the crucial need for increased capacity to life-saving care. Doubling in square footage and designed to support a reduction in patient wait times, the new space features state-of-the-art trauma rooms, a dedicated area for behavioral health patients, additional emergency imaging capabilities and a continued commitment to high-quality and personalized care.
More Emergency Department Projects
Skanska’s community and workforce engagement strategies led to this project achieving one of the largest small, women-owned and minority-owned business spends in the state’s history. As the largest expansion in the history of UVA Health, the new flagship hospital nearly doubles the number of treatment rooms to accommodate its more than 60,000 annual visitors. Achieving net-zero potable water building offset, the project reduces environmental impact while harnessing the calming effects of nature with each patient room and staff breakroom opening to a gracious view of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.
As the leading network of healthcare providers in the region, the location of the Mullica Hill Campus Replacement Hospital promotes greater access to high quality care, improving the health of the community it serves. Operating under a full IPD contract, Skanska delivered this replacement hospital ahead of schedule. Equipped with innovative Smart Room technology to enhance communication between members of the care team and patients, the state-of-the-art medical center transforms the health care experience.
More Patient Tower Projects
Skanska used innovative data and analytics to safeguard the project schedule on this state-of-the-art surgical tower. As the largest building on the Chapel Hill campus, the Surgical Tower promotes UNC Health’s mission to provide high quality care to the people of North Carolina. With a larger space to accommodate newer and more advanced technology, the tower houses modernized surgical spaces, enhanced pre- and post-operation rooms and comfortable spaces for loved ones to wait during procedures.
UNC Health, Surgical Tower
Skanska implemented Dusty Robotics, a robot-powered 2D field printer, to enhance collaboration among trade partners by printing layouts for all trades in a single pass. Our team also implemented Lean strategies to cut construction rework in half, saving $3 million in the project budget and three months on the schedule. This early turnover allowed Sutter Health’s Samaritan Court’s eight clinical specialties—orthopedics, neurology, women’s services, and an outpatient clinic and surgery center—to provide earlier and greater access to affordable care options for the South Bay community.
More Outpatient Facility Projects
The new patient tower and renovation project is helping meet the needs of a fast-growing West San Antonio community by expanding access to obstetric, neonatal and adult intensive care services. Skanska is delivering the project in three phases: phase one is new parking, phase two is the new five-story tower, and phase three is the first-floor OBED renovation work. Public access will be provided from the main hospital floors to each of the five new patient floors.
While constructing VHC Health’s new outpatient expansion in the heart of a residential neighborhood that is a long-established area of Arlington, V.A., Skanska worked closely with the local community to minimize disruptions. We created a neighborhood communications plan, that included quarterly meetings, a dedicated hotline and daily perimeter site walks to ensure no debris was in the yards of homeowners.
As the largest hospital in the Lee Health system, Gulf Coast Medical Center houses a Level II Trauma Center, the Neuroscience Institute, orthopedic, oncology and cardiology services. Our team appointed an onsite, dedicated liaison to facilitate communication between the project team, hospital staff, community and other key stakeholders. This effort allowed the hospital to remain fully operational while ensuring a positive experience for the staff throughout the extensive expansion, which added three stories and 268 patient beds.

Children’s hospitals are places of hope and healing, where young patients can dream, play and forget, if only momentarily, the obstacles they are facing. Women’s health services are equally as critical as they focus on the full spectrum of care, including birthing, post-partum, gynecological, breast, heart, and menopausal treatment. We take extra precautions to create calm and pristine environments where families can enjoy time together.

Skanska is delivering a new medical education building and parking garage, which will include interdisciplinary education for graduate medical students, resident training, and nursing, to aid in a medical education program expansion throughout the UT Health East Texas Health System.
Under a design-build delivery, Skanska built the new college of medicine and cardiovascular research institute which served as the anchor project in a newly formed downtown Tampa district. The institute includes clinical spaces, research laboratories, two large 200-person auditoriums, an experiential learning lab and state-of-the-art technologies to allow for teaching flexibility.
Skanska served as owner’s representative/project manager on several projects that included the replacement of 7 air handler units in the Main Building on CSTCC’s main campus, replacement of the fire loop on the main campus, fire sprinkler upgrades, main gym roof replacement, renovation of the Allied Health Simulation Lab, and manufacturing lab upgrades at their Evendale campus Work Development Center.
The phased renovation project addresses program needs of six different schools of health science, each with their own curriculum and accreditation requirements. The project is meeting the goals of multiple user-groups by providing renovated classrooms and lecture halls, laboratories, common lobbies, restrooms and circulation spaces, and a new, state of the art simulation suite shared by all of the health sciences schools.
The state-of-the-art space unites the four institutes of treatment, education, research and advocacy in one building. Labs for bench and translational research, facilities for a pediatric biorepository, a 400-person auditorium, imaging and exam areas, 50,000-SF office space and a biomarker discovery center are also housed in the facility.
A new 145,000-SF building combines research and education space along with the Comparative Oncology Research Center. There are five thematic areas: biomaterials - body device interfaces, brain health and disease, cardiovascular sciences, infectious disease and immunity and metabolism and obesity.
This new facility enhances the ongoing expansion of the university’s health and human services, and consolidates the health and movement sciences programs, communication disorders, nursing, public health, and recreation, tourism, and sport management academic departments in one location. The new building is designed to promote interdisciplinary learning through faculty and student engagement and collaboration across the university.
This four-story academic center houses the medical education curriculum for Indiana University, the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana. It includes a simulation center, dental clinic, amphitheater, clinical research area, teaching classrooms, offices and surface parking.

The building will remain fully occupied throughout the system upgrade. On this project our team:Provided preconstruction services for a multi-phased major HVAC system upgrade in Building One (SPH1) on Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health campus. Delivered cost optioneering and work phasing studies to support a long-range plan to renovate and replace the laboratory exhaust and office ventilation systems.
A 350,000-SF state-of-the-art and first-of-its-kind translational research program in Virginia that inspires, supports, accelerates, and promotes cutting-edge discoveries and translates them from the research laboratory to clinical care. The building includes a modular multi-use research laboratory for 100-150 primary investigators for a variety of disciplines. The University of Virginia's Manning Institute of Biotechnology will play a broad role in the Commonwealth of Virginia through clinical trials with researchers in the UVA School of Medicine and UVA Health, and a manufacturing center. The Institute will foster an environment that inspires, supports excellence, and promotes discoveries and innovative healthcare solutions that move from the bench to the bedside as quickly as possible.
A new 80,000-SF health sciences building will be three-stories and situated on Durham Tech’s main campus. The building will house classrooms, science labs, simulation labs, and study spaces for the health sciences and allied health programs.
A 92,000-SF project to create a state-of-the-art academic facility to support the University of Connecticut Health Center’s goals and anticipated growth. The project included 65,000-SF of renovations and 27,000-SF in new academic space, which supports the School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine. The new facility features all new MEP systems, lecture halls, simulation rooms, informal study spaces, an anatomy lab, wellness center, tutoring center, testing areas, a 245-seat learning center and multidisciplinary learning spaces. The building is LEED® Gold certified.
